The Island Insurance Foundation announced a $10,000 donation to Teach For America-Hawaii, to support the nonprofit’s work in high-need communities. Teach For America recruits, trains and supports recent college graduates and professionals who make a two-year commitment to teach in under-resourced communities and gain the foundational experience for a lifetime of educational leadership and advocacy. The organization has partnered with schools in Hawai’i since 2006 and currently supports approximately 120 teachers who collective impact nearly 9,000 students this school year.
The Island Insurance Foundation donation will provide financial assistance for the ongoing support that Teach For America-Hawai’i provides to its corps members, who are public school teachers in more than 30 schools on Oahu and the Big Island in a diverse range of schools including Native Hawaiian Homesteads, military bases and charter schools. This is the fifth year the foundation has donated to Teach For America-Hawai’i.
Teach for America is the national corps of outstanding recent college graduates who commit to teach for two years in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in expanding educational opportunity. Today, more than 9,000 corps members are teaching in 43 regions across the country while nearly 24,000 Teach for America alumni continue working from inside and outside the field of education for the fundamental changes necessary to ensure educational excellence and equity.
