Island Pacific Energy Completes More Than 1,000 Solar Panels at Punahou Schools

Island Pacific Energy Punahou School's Seven Photovoltaic Systems

Island Pacific Energy, Hawai‘i’s largest operator of solar energy facilities, has completed a total of 1,006 solar panels on all buildings at Punahou School’s Omidyar K-1 Neighborhood

Seven Photovoltaic Systems on All K-1 Buildings Produce 278 Kilowatts, Generating Energy for More Than 300 Kindergarten and First Grade Students

Island Pacific Energy, Hawai‘i’s largest operator of solar energy facilities, has completed a total of 1,006 solar panels on all buildings at Punahou School’s Omidyar K-1 Neighborhood, helping it earn a Platinum LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) status from the U.S. Green Building Council.

“This is the largest photovoltaic installation of any K-1 private school in the nation and possibly the largest photovoltaic system on a single site on Oahu,” said Joseph Saturnia, President of Island Pacific Energy. “We are very excited that Punahou School’s K-1 students and faculty will now benefit from the clean, renewable power generated from all seven systems. As the pioneer in providing photovoltaic solar energy to non-profit organizations in Hawai‘i, we are proud to have executed more power purchase agreements than any other company in Hawai’i.“

The seven photovoltaic (PV) systems were installed as part of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), where Island Pacific Energy pays for, installs, maintains, and operates the solar energy facility and sells the power generated with no upfront costs from Punahou School.

All buildings in the Omidyar K-1 Neighborhood each received PV systems including City House, Mountain House 1, Mountain House 2, Forrest House 1, Forrest House 2, PE Pavilion, and the Amphitheater totaling 278 kilowatts. The seven systems produce nearly 100 percent of the power used by the Omidyar K-1 Neighborhood.

The state-of-the-art Omidyar K-1 Neighborhood opened in late July 2010 with eco-friendly classrooms, buildings, and play areas.

This is the second project completed for Punahou School by Island Pacific Energy. In 2009, Island Pacific Energy completed five PV systems on different buildings at Punahou School totaling 458.01 kilowatts.
